Going down to Fort Worth I really didn’t know what to expect, but knew that Nike doesn’t ever disappoint. Boy was I right, although Nike has only been building clubs for five years they have surpassed other companies fitting systems with this one. We were all excited to arrive at the Nike Testing and Fitting Facility and were warmly greeted by Nike Staff. After a brief brand introduction we got an hour to sit down with Tom Stites as he explained anything and everything that we wanted to know about Nike Golf Equipment. He was extremely humble considering all of his accomplishments and was very honest and open about any questions we had. Next we got to see and get a hands on take with the IFS System. IFS stands for Intelligent Fitting System. I have had the opportunity to try a couple other Artificial Intelligence Fitting Systems from various vendor’s in the past and always left disappointed. Nike took their time with this new system and got it done right. The IFS System incorporates three big components. The first being a newly revamped launch monitor. This launch monitor is overly impressive, quite a change from their previous talking model! This new compact design is ultra portable and extremely dynamic. It has Bluetooth capabilities allowing for the computer and monitor to talk back and forth wirelessly. It takes 12 pictures during the impact zone which helps increase the accuracy of the readings. Finally it has its own LCD screen which takes the portability aspect to a whole new level. Fitter’s can now take the launch monitor by itself onto the course with their client’s to verify launch conditions! This is a first in the industry and another helpful tool that Nike is providing their clubfitters. The second new change-up to their fitting line is the ability to interchange heads and shafts. Although other companies have been using this type of technology for a little while Nike got it done right! The ability to interchange the heads and shafts was very simple and had no small moving parts that could get damaged. After 20 seconds of twisting you had the ability to hit Drivers, Fairway Woods, Hybrids, Irons, and even Wedges! Most companies have stayed within the driver realm but Nike lapped everyone else by being able to interchange almost every single golf club in their line! The shaft lineup that Nike is offering for 2008 is comprised of around 27 different shafts. This matrix of shafts allows for a variety of options for the club fitter and helps them to provide the client with a perfect fit. The third and final aspect is the intelligent fitting software that works hand in hand with the launch monitor and equipment. The software steps you through an entire bag fitting and makes it extremely simple to understand. It has modules for how to fit Drivers, fairway thru hybrids, irons, and wedges. The most impressive of these modules had to be the driver fitting. It started the fitting by having the client hit two 10.5 drivers in different model heads and shafts. After six total swings between the two clubs it analyzed your numbers and picked a driver that would help improve your launch conditions. After a total 18 swings it gave you two different recommended drivers. The first was a distance driver and the second was an accuracy driver. By providing the client with a choice of two different drivers it allowed for the client to choose which aspect would most improve their driving game. The intelligence within the driver module was outstanding and almost always helped improve their launch conditions.
